Named after one of the first inventions that led to photography, Camera Obscura who hail from Glasgow Scotland, have released “My Maudlin Career” on indie giants 4AD label. I Confess, despite my self proclamation as the Champion of The Philosophy of Language, i had to look up “Maudlin” in the Oxford Dictionary. Look out! It’s an older British word; middle English 4 “teary eyed” or “drunk to the point of sadness” dost thou not know thee old world words sloth.
I’ve known the 4AD label for many moons & LUV classic acts like This Mortal Coil, Clan of Xymox, Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, & the timeless Lonely is An Eyesore compilation.
2 me, Camera Obscura don’t seem to fit into that genre of melancholy sonominous with 4AD . Perhaps it’s the times, but their pop seems more main stream with bright sounds & a wide appeal to main stream pop fans. (Perhaps even country fans) Not that it sounds Like Lady GaGa or Britney Spears but i’m sure there exists a crossover with main street pop fans.
I do do like this record however. From the first song French Navy, Sweetest Thing, Swans, right through to Honey in the Sun, Tracyanne Campbell’s sweet female vocals produce an excellent indie pop record from the start to the end.
